Pastors
Grant Edwards and I (Fellowship Christian Church in Springfield,
Ohio) just returned from the Philippines where we led a Discipling
Another to Love Jesus (DA2LJ) conference for 250 pastors, church
leaders, and World Vision workers. This time we were really HIGH
as our venue was Baguio City, a modern city of 250,000 located
on the top of a mountain in the thin and cool air of the northern
part of the Philippines.
As
we find everywhere we go, almost none of the 250 in attendance,
when asked if they really knew how to disciple a new believer
to keep them from falling away, were able to say yes. This is
the common tragedy of the church today in the world; we have lost
the Great Commission even though it is the last will and testament
of our Lord Jesus. After 2 ˝ days together, all conference participants
can now not only successfully disciple new believers, they can
also successfully launch an effective one on one discipleship
ministry back in their home churches. We had participants from
all over the Philippines so the impact of this training will be
far reaching.
At
the conference we met a young Filipino woman named Laoni. Laoni
was trained several months ago by our DA2LJ National Director
in the Philippines, Pastor Fred Monasterio. Since that time, Laoni
has discipled 13 leaders in her church who are now in turn discipling
25 members. Talk about the multiplication factor – from 1 to 38
and growing! That’s the power of DA2LJ as it focuses not on discipling
people but rather on making disciplers who will go out and disciple
others to become disciplers.
Once
again we were protected as we traveled and at the conference by
armed guards as terrorism continues to be a plague on the Philippines.
Even though Baguio City is considered a “safe” area, a local political
leader was assassinated just a day or so after we left the area.
The Lord has been so gracious to us each time we go into these
dangerous areas – He must really want to see His Great Commission
brought back into churches all over the world! I am starting to
feel normal having guards, soldiers, and automatic weapons around
me all the time.
Please pray for
the Filipino pastors and leaders as they start to disciple new believers
who will in turn disciple new believers.
