Robert Rummage
Robert Rummage is associate pastor of CrossCurrent
– a Gen-X targeted ministry of Christian Fellowship Church, in Ashburn,
VA, located in the D.C. metro high-tech corridor, right down the street from WorldCom
and AOL headquarters. “For us at CrossCurrent, it’s not about institutional
church. We’re stripping all the stale traditions that North American Christianity
has built up over the years, and trying to do church for our generation in a real
and fresh way. It’s about passion for God, authentic community, and finding
real-life solutions straight out of the Bible”, says Robert. On a typical
Sunday, that means edgy ambiance, with low lights, candles, and shear curtains
bathed in light. It means informal seating around round tables, with people eating
food from the breakfast bar, and sipping java. It means full use of the creative
arts to convey in prophetic power the word of God. It means a worship set that
is, at once, intense and vulnerable. And it means relevant messaging that engages
the seeker, while challenging the God-chaser. Robert states, “The life of
the group, though, is in the small groups scattered around the area during the
weekdays. I lead the intercessory group, and the college-age group called Turning
Point. My wife and I hang out with one of the married couple’s small groups
also. These relationships are where real church happens. Most of the decisions
to follow Christ, and most of the real discipleship is taking place in the small
group context.”
Robert and his wife Amy, and their five children,
are in the midst of a retooling for ministry. After a seven year stint in the
Central-European nation of Slovakia, (involving four years of base leadership
with YWAM in the capitol city, Bratislava), Robert and Amy came back to the U.S.
for a time of sabbatical and “dry-dock time” in late 1999. Through
their involvement in CrossCurrent for the past year and a half their ministry
philosophy has been under construction. “It’s becoming more intercession-based,
more prophetic in nature, and more cell-church planting-oriented. For us, though,
the Vanguard family is such a good fit. There is so much of a DNA match, with
the high values on mentoring, leadership development, missions, church planting,
and ministry in the power of the Holy Spirit. It’s the family connection
we need to be effective in our CrossCurrent ministry, and to further position
ourselves to be strategically effective in the next phase of our life-work.”
