Developing Leaders, August 2003
One
Christian leader has said that the ministry can be summarized
by rubber bands and shoelaces.
Rubber
bands are designed to stretch. We need to stretch people enough
to challenge them, but not so much that they snap. Finding just
the right amount of stretch is one of the challenges leaders face.
This amount will vary from person to person, and is to some degree
a function of style or personality. Some will thrive on a huge
challenge, others desire to be guided through the process step-by-step,
but most need something in between. As leaders, we need to find
the right fit for people, challenging but not overwhelming them.
Shoelaces
are designed to connect. The function of a leader is to tie the
laces appropriately, connecting people according to their needs:
connecting brand new believers with experienced Christians, connecting
leaders with resources, connecting people with similar ministries
together in teams. Shoelaces tie people together. When shoes are
laced and tied, they fit well.
As
leaders, we stretch people and tie them together as a means of support.
We challenge them enough to keep them growing and connect them with
others to provide encouragement and help as they continue on their
journey.
